Photosynthetic activity in Devonian Foraminifera

چکیده

Abstract. Photosynthetically active foraminifera are prolific carbonate producers in warm, sunlit, surface waters of the oceans. Foraminifera have repeatedly developed mixotrophic strategies (i.e., ability an organism or holobiont to both feed and photosynthesize) by facultative obligate endosymbiosis with microalgae sequestering plastids (kleptoplasts) ingested algae. Mixotrophy provides access essential nutrients (e.g., N, P) through feeding while providing carbohydrates lipids produced photosynthesis, resulting substantial energetic advantage sunlit environments where food dissolved scarce. Our morphological as well stable carbon isotope data provide, now, earliest (Mid-Devonian) evidence for photosynthetic activity first advanced, multichambered, calcareous foraminifera, Semitextularia, from tropical shelf Laurussia paleocontinent. This adaptation likely influenced evolutionary radiation Devonian (“Givetian revolution”), one most important events foraminiferal history, that coincided worldwide development diverse calcifying marine communities inhabiting linked stromatoporoid coral reefs.

Using an Infrared Gas Analyzer for Evaluation of Photosynthetic Activity in Some Iranian Pistachio Cultivars

Photosynthetic rates of six pistachio cultivars were studied including Ohadi, Kalleh-Ghochi, Akbari, AhmadAghaii, Rezaii Zoudras and Haratii. Measurements were done using OFF and ON shoots at different stages of fruit growth and development included: - Beginning of endocarp growth; - pith hardening; - Beginning of endosperm rapid growth; - end of embryo development; - ripening and harvesting ti...

Actin Phylogeny of Foraminifera

Molecular phylogenies of foraminifera are commonly inferred from the small subunit rRNA (SSU) genes, which can easily be obtained from single cells isolated from environmental samples. The SSU phylogenies, however, are often biased by heterogeneity of substitution rates, and their resolution of higher level relationships is often very low. The sequences of protein-coding genes provide an import...

Coral Bleaching Independent of Photosynthetic Activity

The global decline of reef-building corals is due in part to the loss of algal symbionts, or "bleaching," during the increasingly frequent periods of high seawater temperatures. During bleaching, endosymbiotic dinoflagellate algae (Symbiodinium spp.) either are lost from the animal tissue or lose their photosynthetic pigments, resulting in host mortality if the Symbiodinium populations fail to ...

Ba incorporation in benthic foraminifera

Barium (Ba) incorporated in the calcite of many foraminiferal species is proportional to the concentration of Ba in seawater. Since the open ocean concentration of Ba closely follows seawater alkalinity, foraminiferal Ba /Ca can be used to reconstruct the latter. Alternatively, Ba /Ca from foraminiferal shells can also be used to reconstruct salinity in coastal settings in which seawater Ba con...

Sulfite reductase activity in extracts of various photosynthetic bacteria.

Extracts of representative bacterial strains from the various families of photosynthetic prokaryotes are demonstrated to possess significant levels of sulfite reductase [EC 1.8.99.1; hydrogen-sulfide: (acceptor)oxidoreductase] activity with reduced methyl viologen as electron donor, but not NADPH(2). The enzyme is localized primarily in the soluble fraction of the extracts, in contrast to adeny...
